Get into the festive spirit on a German Christmas markets break. Throughout the festive season small towns, picturesque villages and cosmopolitan cities located along the River Rhine are transformed into enchanting winter wonderlands. Frankfurt is one of Germany's oldest and largest Christmas markets with attractive stalls and festive culinary delights. With the opportunity to visit Rudesheim as well as enroute stops at Koblenz & Cologne you are sure to return home with many wonderful Chrsitmas gifts.
Day 1 Depart your local pick up point for our journey to Newcastle for the overnight ferry sailing to Ijmuiden. Enjoy the facilities on board including a selection of bars and restaurants and nightly entertainment.
Day 2 This morning we disembark the ship in Ljmuiden and head to Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. This charming city, with picturesque squares, quaint courtyards and alleyways, hosts several markets. As well as the usual festive fare, one of the local specialities to try is a quince liqueur. Later we continue to Frankfurt for a three night stay at Novotel Frankfurt City arriving in time for dinner.
Day 3 Spend time at leisure in Frankfurt, where the delightful Christmas market stretches down to the River Main. This is Germany's oldest Christmas market dating back to 1393 and is also one of the largest. Admire the giant Christmas tree towering over the main square in the Old Town. Mouth watering aromas of gluhwein, roasted chestnuts, cinnamon and vanilla add to the atmosphere. Delicious local specialities to sample include hot apple wine, small dried plums figurines, and Bethmannchen (traditional marizpan and almond biscuits). Dinner is at the hotel this evening.
Day 4 This morning we travel to the medieval town of Rudesheim, on the banks of the Rhine, which is especially magical in the weeks before Christmas when the Drosselgrasse street is adorned with festive decoration. The Christmas market is held in the heart of the Old Town with a huge nativity scene, complete with life sized figures, in the market square. Sample the famous Rudesheimer coffee laced with Asbach Uralt brandy, made in the town. We return to the hotel for dinner.
Day 5 We check out of the hotel and travel to Cologne. There are a number of Christmas Markets spread across the historic city, each with a different theme and all beautifully decorated. One of the most popular is centred around the Gothic cathedral with festive stalls selling decorations, artisan handicrafts and culinary specialities. We then continue to ljmuiden for the overnight ferry sailing to Newcastle with cabin accommodation.
Day 6 We arrive in Newcastle early this morning, disembark the ship and continue our journey home.
